There is an interesting background to the Cambodia casinos that sit just across the dividing line from next door Thailand, where casino wagering is banned. Eight gambling dens are situated in a relatively small location in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent location, a 3 to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The astonishing capital gained from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; although, financing sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and though visas are allegedly required to pass, there are methods around this, as is accurate of most border crossings.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored barge gambling hall, contains 150 slot machine games and sixty tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of 150 slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 one armed bandits and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 table games, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the common gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 casinos in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive resort and hotel building that features a number of comforts accompanying the gambling hall, which provides 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight tables.
